Thomas and Annie are connected together with the battery compartment being in Annie's coach. There is a total of 3 AA Batteries needed for the train to run whistle and puff steam. The only tool required is a small Phillips head screwdriver. After each use it’s recommended to remove the reservoir at the bottom of the train and drain any and all water. There is a filter which can be washed and an extra filter is included with the set. Remember there are two switches on this toy. Many people think their toy is broken or defective because they switch on the top switch and the train moves but it doesn’t' whistle, glow red and puff steam. For the Thomas steam train to chuff properly and whistle, glow red and puff steam you must turn the switch on under Annie’s' coach. This is a common mistake. Also it’s recommended to use distilled water. Anyway you can read the directions for yourself.
