About the Event
The
Day Out with Thomas event takes place all over the world including the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. They have been taking place for some two decades and were started by
The Britt Allcroft Company in the 1990s. The events take place at tourist railroads and restoration railways.
In Canada and the United States, Thomas travels throughout most of the fifty states and makes his way into three Canadian provinces. Thomas is usually represented by a dummy engine which has to be pushed by an operating engine. Strasburg Railroad of Pennsylvania has made a large fleet of these dummy engines and has also made their own operating Thomas. Their Thomas was made out of an ex-Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal steam switcher. At these events there are almost always other Thomas related displays where children can play with trains.
In the United Kingdom, the Thomas engine is usually made by the hosting railway. Thomas is not always the same size, but is always an 0-6-0. Other engines from Sodor are usually operating with Thomas. Pulling both young and old railfans. Some of the other engines are Diesel, Percy, Donald and Douglas, Duck, Oliver, James, Henry, Toby, Bill and Ben, Spencer, Fergus, Daisy and Mavis.
