The North Carolina Transportation Museum is located in Spencer, North Carolina which was once Southern Railway Company's largest steam locomotive servicing facility. In 1977 the North Carolina Transportation Museum Foundation was created and the group acquired transportation artifacts where volunteers aide in the restoration and operations of these artifacts that include trains, trolley cars, airplanes, automobiles and wagons.
Special events include a Day out With Thomas are offered and other passenger excursion trains which operate several times per day throughout the tourist season. As a true heritage railroad visitors can enjoy either steam or diesel locomotives from the museum's collection, there are cab rides available also. The North Carolina Transport Museum is designated as part of the Division of State Historic Sites, which is part of the Department of Cultural Resources. The museum also features antique automobiles, dozens of rail cars with different exhibit areas. There is also a 37 bay Roundhouse which includes 25 locomotives.
